Summary

Five orphans。 Two sword-wielding vigilantes。 One mansion。 No rules。

April thought she had her happy ending。 After all, she has her new house and new friends and new guardian。 But she also has a very big new secret。

The kids of Winterborne House are the only ones who know that Gabriel Winterborne--famous billionaire and terrible cook--is really a sword-wielding vigilante。

What they don't know is that he's not the only one。

When a masked figure breaks in, looking for something--or someone--it's clear that Gabriel has met his match, and now no one is safe。 April and her friends will have to solve a decades-old mystery in order to hang on to the most important thing in the world: each other。

Loved book 1, this sequel was so disappointing。 It was so complicated and not nearly satisfying enough。 Hopefully theres a third book to tie up the loose ends because there really are too many loose ends。 Feels way too dark to be a middle age novel, I was terrified for those kids being on their own for as long as they were。 The characters didn’t have time to develop because there was so much going on。 Tl;dr It just really wasn’t satisfying, there’s way too many loose ends, and the characters did Loved book 1, this sequel was so disappointing。 It was so complicated and not nearly satisfying enough。 Hopefully theres a third book to tie up the loose ends because there really are too many loose ends。 Feels way too dark to be a middle age novel, I was terrified for those kids being on their own for as long as they were。 The characters didn’t have time to develop because there was so much going on。 Tl;dr It just really wasn’t satisfying, there’s way too many loose ends, and the characters didn’t develop。I wouldn’t recommend this book to a friend, hopefully theres a next book that makes the series worth recommending 。。。more

Had to read book two after the ending of the first book。 Had to know what happened! Another great read。 Higly recommend。

Solid sequel book。 Filled in holes, had heart, lots of twists and surprises, lots of set up for sequels。 Great character and setting。 Heart and accuracy for children who come from foster care。 Would make a good Netflix series。

This is one of the only sequels I’ve read that I would rate equally to the first。 Both books are relatively short reads。 My critique (the reason I took off a star) is that plot for these stories is quite frankly weird and sometimes hard to follow。 After finishing this second book, things fell right into place but others needed a few minutes to process。 Also I know the characters are young, but I definitely sensed some “romantic chemistry” between Tim and April and I was hoping that would develop This is one of the only sequels I’ve read that I would rate equally to the first。 Both books are relatively short reads。 My critique (the reason I took off a star) is that plot for these stories is quite frankly weird and sometimes hard to follow。 After finishing this second book, things fell right into place but others needed a few minutes to process。 Also I know the characters are young, but I definitely sensed some “romantic chemistry” between Tim and April and I was hoping that would develop into something, but it didnt。 Other than those two things, I thought this story was fun。 It was action packed and suspenseful… classic Ally Carter, which is why I read it! 。。。more

4。4| Well, that was…absolutely fantastic and I’m kind of upset I didn’t read this sooner。 First off, what is it with grumpy old men that feel the need to protect the main characters that make me just absolutely love the book? Anyway, that was an amazing book and I wish I hadn’t read this at midnight so I could comprehend it better。 Man, I really need to start reading more middle grade because this was just amazing。

This was such a good book! Saying that I missed reading Ally Carter's writing would be an understatement, so, needless to say, I was very excited to pick up this novel。 I found April to be a fun and endearing main character。 I also thoroughly enjoyed all of the supporting characters。 Tim holds a special place in my heart, but there are parts of every character that I love。 I think that Colin is funny, Sadie is just so headstrong, and Violet has the common sense that the rest of the group can lac This was such a good book! I think that it was a lot of fun, and it was a quick/fast-paced read。 This isn't my favorite book by Ally Carter, but it is so different from her other novels that I can't really compare it。 This series should be read in order。 Also, I need to say that this novel really reminded me of "The Mysterious Benedict Society"。 I really liked that series, so I am not mad about it。 I, of course, will be picking up more from this author, and I will keep my eye out for this series continuing。 。。。more

A solid second book in the series。 There were plenty of twists and turns and overall an exciting story。 Age appropriate for the target audience of young chapter book readers。 I can't wait for Addie to read it and tell me what she thinks。 A solid second book in the series。 There were plenty of twists and turns and overall an exciting story。 Age appropriate for the target audience of young chapter book readers。 I can't wait for Addie to read it and tell me what she thinks。 。。。more

Another good book in the Winterborne Home。 I know this is for children, but I've really enjoyed this series so far。 There's definitely room for more books and growth。 Another good book in the Winterborne Home。 I know this is for children, but I've really enjoyed this series so far。 There's definitely room for more books and growth。 。。。more

I don't usually continue middle grade series unless it's a book series Ben and I are reading together, but this was so good。 I looked immediately for a book 3! This was excellent。 Loved it as much as the first book。 The relationships between the kids are stronger than ever as they mesh into a family unit despite Gabriel’s surliness and overall lack of parenting。 There are so many revelations, surprised, thrills, action, danger, on land and by sea, that it’s wonder the pages ever stopped moving。 April, steadfast Tim, Violet, the amazing Sadie, the hilarious Colin, are such wonderful characters as they bond not only with each other but with Gabriel。 Afte This was excellent。 Loved it as much as the first book。 The relationships between the kids are stronger than ever as they mesh into a family unit despite Gabriel’s surliness and overall lack of parenting。 There are so many revelations, surprised, thrills, action, danger, on land and by sea, that it’s wonder the pages ever stopped moving。 April, steadfast Tim, Violet, the amazing Sadie, the hilarious Colin, are such wonderful characters as they bond not only with each other but with Gabriel。 After years in the system, they’ve finally found a home, unconventional though it may be, it’s home and they are family。 。。。more

Again, a great middle school read aloud- a lot of action and cliffhanger parts, plot twists… enough to hold the attention of this challenging age group。

This is a sequel to the first book, which was full of intrigue and mystery surrounding the identity of the swashbuckling, sword-wielding, super-ish hero The Sentinel。April and her fellow, not-normal classmates at Winterborne House -- Sadie, Tim, Violet, and Colin -- thought they'd sussed out who that was: Gabriel Winterborne, their unseen benefactor back-from-the-sea and incorrectly presumed dead。 They even prevented a coup of Winterborne by a distant cousin who mistakenly thought he'd killed Ga This is a sequel to the first book, which was full of intrigue and mystery surrounding the identity of the swashbuckling, sword-wielding, super-ish hero The Sentinel。April and her fellow, not-normal classmates at Winterborne House -- Sadie, Tim, Violet, and Colin -- thought they'd sussed out who that was: Gabriel Winterborne, their unseen benefactor back-from-the-sea and incorrectly presumed dead。 They even prevented a coup of Winterborne by a distant cousin who mistakenly thought he'd killed Gabriel as a child。But in the process, they lost the love of Gabriel's life -- Isabella Nelson, and the administrator of the Winterborne foundation。 She fell into the sea, and three months later, she's still not back。 She's alive, they know, because she's sending postcards that say: "STILL MAD。" In all caps。Then CPS (Child Protective Services) shows up and of course raises all sorts of alarm bells on how the children are being raised by the PTSD-suffering, highly-unreliable Gabriel, without Izzy -- who previously took care of all the "kid-student" stuff。 The paperwork。 The schooling。 Ordering clothes in the right sizes。 Making pancakes。 Buying the groceries for the pancakes。 Basically everything。The specter of being taken away from Winterborne is established。 Re-established? And then the kids follow Gabriel on what they think is one of his Sentinel rounds and discover, he's been lured by the promise of Izzy's presence to a fundraiser to rebuild the burned down museum attended by…dozens and dozens of Sentinels。In a room full of Sentinels, one man uncannily knows who Gabriel is under his Sentinel disguise。 When they get home, a Sentinel is there and fights with Gabriel, wounding him。 Badly。The next morning, there's a large pool of blood and he's gone。 Then the CPS investigator rings the doorbell。And if I say any more, I'll ruin the read。 But just know, there's a plot afoot and a new villain / enemy who's already launched the first salvo in the fight for Winterborne。 Enjoy!Looking for more book suggestions for your 7th/8th grade classroom and students? I just can't figure out if I like or dislike these books。 I like the quirky characters and how the book reads- especially as a read a loud- it's pretty witty for a mid-grade book。 But somehow I keep getting lost in the plot- not quite understanding what's going on and why。 I don't understand some of the characters' motivations or why they are suddenly gone or missing AGAIN。 It feels repetitive in this way- April is abandoned, April finally attaches to a parental figure, April is abandoned again, I just can't figure out if I like or dislike these books。 I like the quirky characters and how the book reads- especially as a read a loud- it's pretty witty for a mid-grade book。 But somehow I keep getting lost in the plot- not quite understanding what's going on and why。 I don't understand some of the characters' motivations or why they are suddenly gone or missing AGAIN。 It feels repetitive in this way- April is abandoned, April finally attaches to a parental figure, April is abandoned again, April is in a ridiculously dangerous situation, April is rescued, and repeat。。。 I don't think I'd pick up another in this series。 。。。more

a good second book The second in the series, and still good。 A little more dramatic than the first, and I got a little tired of April feeling sorry for herself all the timeBut I think it portrayed the age well。

Can't wait to see if Ally Carter actually finishes this series。。。。Laura Knight Keating did a fine job narrating too。 I wish she'd brush up on the accents though or just not do them。 Loved this! I really liked this book。 It picked up where the last one left off。 Ally Carter has such a great way of writing found family, while incorporating long last family and at the same time providing action and adventure。

I wasn't sure if I was going to finish it at some point but I'm really glad I did, it was so good and full of excitement and action。 I am once again begging for this to become a TV series, I just know it would be a smash。 I also really like how all the loose ends were tied up (Except for Izzy's whereabouts) and I even had a little tear-up moment。 I wasn't sure if I was going to finish it at some point but I'm really glad I did, it was so good and full of excitement and action。 I am once again begging for this to become a TV series, I just know it would be a smash。 I also really like how all the loose ends were tied up (Except for Izzy's whereabouts) and I even had a little tear-up moment。 。。。more
